Talk like a South African!

In South Africa we don’t use the word ‘elevator’? Like the British we prefer to say ‘lift’. For the most part, we tend to follow the British rather than the Americans when it comes to the English language.

Let me give you an example: a traditional South African greeting is ‘Howzit’ which translates simply as ‘hello’ or ‘how are you?’ Another somewhat more confusing expression is ‘Howzit, my bra’ or ‘Howzit, my bru’ and that can mean you are asking any friend of yours (or of course your actual brother) how he is. So when you hear someone asking that question, he or she is most definitely not having a conversation with the undergarment women wear, which is also called a ‘bra’!
