As the massive red orb of the African winter sun sets on another weekend spent in the field, I reflect back on what has happened, time spent on the shooting range with all sorts of calibers. Long and close shots with the tracking dogs as exited as ever.

The phone rings and the call is from a good friend. He is exited and I can sense it in his voice. “Jono do you have availability on these dates – we are hunting lion ”. My heart just about stops the next words just don’t seem to be spoken.

So here, the start of the trip is near. I am not the hunter but a back up PH. The back up on my first lion hunt. Having had the opportunity to view lion at our national reserves and also in their natural state on our hunting concessions my heart quickens and the excitement is back as I sit here typing this. Will this hunt go as planned… a one shot perfect kill… has the client come prepared or will it turn into 300kg killing machine intent in hunting us.

According to the colleagues and research, they come at 80km per hour and you need to shoot straight to stay alive. They are soft-bodied animals and I know that penetration will not be an issue but if he is coming will you place the shot where it needs to be. I can only trust the Peregrine Monolithic’s will do the rest.
