A Last minute Warthog

Last weekend after a busy Saturday at a game auction i loaded my family, my wife daughter and 2 Jack Russels Gypsy and Cruiser, into our yamaha rhino side by side.

The plan was to circle around round the cultivated lands and then off to the game camp for a late afternoon game drive a sundowner next to the dam with a few snacks. Every thing was packed up and ready to roll.

As i walked out i put my standard issue working rifle 416 Rem mag back and took out my trusted 223rem mag my varminting rifle, my thought process as normal never leave the house or vehicle with out a rifle adequate of saving your life in the area your in.

We set off driving out the gates and we where chatting enjoying the warm sun of what is left of summer, after circling the whole land and on the western side coming back in, the sorghum i could see three warthogs running away from us down the row. I normally don’t shoot them and only raise my rifle if they are of good size. The boar i was following in my scope seemed he had a good sized body but average sized tusks.

I stopped the rhino and lay in the road using a dirt mound as a rest. As the boar now leading the three animals stopped in the road my crosshair of my Rudolph VH6-24X50 and the T3 retical(http://rudolphoptics.com/varmint-hunter-vh-6-24×50-30mm-tube-with-t5-reticle/) set at 10X zoom was poised on the centre of the boars shoulder he was i estimated 150m away. At the shot i herd the thump of the bullet hitting home and saw the boar start running hard down the road and then accelerated to go under the fence and he made it quite effortlessly. I watched him disappear out of sight.

I drove up to where i saw him cross the fence i let the dogs go and gypsy was off down wind and then she picked up the sent, not long after i could hear her barking indicating the boar was down about 25 meters from the fence.

In total the boar ran about 75 yards the bullet took the pig just higher than the heart and destroyed both lungs. After a bit of a mission I got the boar back to the rhino and i proceeded to load it up and was surprised to find it weighted about 80KG’s a really good bodied Warthog.

I proceeded to take it home after loading it up and then continued with the rest of the afternoons activities that where now cut a bit shorter but the ice cold beers went down with smiles all round.

I would not recommend a 223rem mag as a pig rifle as it is a bit light for this application but a well placed shot works great( again the all wise statement “a small hole in the heart beats a big hole any where else”), i was also using Premium bullets not a varminter i recovered the 55gr point in the opposite should of the pig

For now the buffalo hunts are lined up and we have plenty of work to do so stand by for a campfire story about Africa’s black death
